Exploring nature together: A new year with BGC Eastview

October 20, 2025

We’re thrilled to begin another year of partnership with the BGC Eastview Program inside Eastview Neighbourhood Community Centre! This fall marks the start of our fourth year bringing no-cost nature connection programming to children in and around Toronto’s Blake-Jones neighbourhood, and the first few weeks have already been full of curiosity, movement, and joy.

Each week, Pine instructors and BGC Eastview participants head outdoors to explore, play, and learn together. So far, we’ve shared excitement about the fall salmon run, played games that get everyone moving, discovered mystery bones and deer skulls, studied field guides to identify local birds, and shared stories about the animals we’ve spotted around our homes. These moments spark laughter, wonder, and meaningful connections to nature and to one another.

As one child exclaimed while peering closely at a skull, “What kind of animal was this? Look at its teeth!” Their curiosity captures the heart of this program, creating space for children to ask questions, explore the unknown, and build confidence outdoors.

At BGC Eastview, staff have seen firsthand how time outdoors strengthens both individuals and the community. As Program Coordinator Laurette Jack explains, “Outdoor education strengthens our sense of community while helping children build confidence, curiosity, and teamwork. It gives our youth hands-on opportunities to learn through nature, boost their mental well-being, and connect meaningfully with their environment.”

Looking ahead, we’re excited for the many adventures to come as we explore fall, winter, and spring together, discovering the changing seasons right here in the city. As Pine’s Executive Director, Andrew McMartin, shared, “Each time we head outside with the Eastview kids, we see how nature inspires confidence and connection. It’s a reminder that every child deserves the chance to explore and feel at home in the natural world.”

A huge thank you to TD Friends of the Environment Foundation, the Moez & Marissa Kassam Equity Fund, the Johansen Larsen Foundation, and Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities for making it possible for Pine to offer this weekly programming free of charge. Together, we’re helping more children access nature and its many benefits, fostering confidence, resilience, and a lifelong connection to the natural world.

We’re deeply grateful to our funders, our partners at Eastview, and our entire community for making another year of discovery, learning, and connection possible. Here’s to many more moments of wonder ahead!

Thank you to our generous supporters:
